SOFIC 2018: JSOC to reveal technology interest areas

The US Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) has revealed a hit-list of technology interest areas due to be exploited over the course of 2018 in association with industry partners.
Due to be made publicly available over the course of May 2018, the solicitation features ‘Secret’ and ‘Unclassified’ interest areas, designed to support JSOC components including the army’s 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta and Naval Special Warfare Development Group.
Defense sources explained to Shephard how JSOC’s ongoing review of various technology areas represented an important consideration to the wider US Special Operations Command as well as conventional armed forces across the Department of Defense (DoD).
According to an official announcement published on the Federal Business Opportunities website on 6 April, the solicitation is aimed at the conduct of studies, training, exercises, research, development, testing, evaluation, and acquisition and procurement to ‘ensure interoperability’ among special operations forces, general purpose forces and interagency and foreign partners.
‘It is JSOC’s desire to inform and influence industry’s internal investment decisions in areas that address special operations forces’ most sensitive and urgent interest areas,’ it continued with particular emphasis on budget austerity and intellectual property.
Technology areas of interest cover the primary mission capability sets of JSOC force components, ranging from lethality, survivability, C4ISTAR, cyber and electronic warfare.
Lethal solutions include explosive method of entry and explosive ordnance disposal; fire support; CBRNE materials; and scalable effects engagement.
C4ISTAR areas of interest include developments in countering unmanned systems; information technology; knowledge and target management; power and energy; visual augmentation; and material sampling.
Other interest areas focus on direction finding, mobility, soldier survival and logistics support.
Technologies will be evaluated during a series of Technical Experimentation (TE) events over the course of 2018, including the Program Executive Office-Special Operations Forces Warrior annual industry collaboration event to be held in November 2018.
The news coincides with the appointment of the first US Air Force officer to command the JSOC. The decision to replace the outgoing commander, LTG Austin Miller (US Army) with Lt Gen Scott Howell (USAF) is expected to be confirmed later in May 2018, defense sources disclosed.
