China Drops A COVID-19 Gauntlet On Australia; Bejing Threatens Punitive Trade Measures To Quiet Canberra’s Rising Calls For An Indeoendent Probe Into COVID-19’s Origins
Want to get a glimpse of how the world will work with Communist China as the world’s economic superpower? Look no further than what is transpriing between Beijing and Canberra. Alan Boyd posted an April 29, 2020 article to the Asia Times, noting that “China has stepped up a diplomatic offensive over Australia’s demands for an inquiry into the origins of COVID-19, amid reports Western intelligence agencies are investigating a Wuhan virus research facility.” He adds that “bilateral relations have sunk to their lowest level in years, over efforts by Australia to mobilize international support for an independent probe into the source (origin) of the coronavirus and the handling of the initial outbreak by China and the World Health Organization (WHO).”
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said today (April 29) that such an investigation is “entirely reasonable and sensible,” and added that an “independent probe was in the “global interest.” I would go further and say absolutely mandatory — we MUST know the origin of the virus — otherwise we are most certainly doomed to experience yet another, novel, coronavirus pandemic. But, I digress.
“On April 27, Beijing’s Ambassador to Canberra, Cheng Jingye, hit back on Canberra’s earlier call for a probe with threats of economic retaliation in an interview with the Australian Financial Review, hinting Beijing would target key Australian sectors like trade and education,” Mr. Boyd wrote.
“Maybe ordinary people will say, “Why should we drink Australian wine? Eat Australian beef?” Cheng said. “The parents of the students would also think…..is this the best place to send their kids?”
“China was Australia’s most important trade partner in 2018-2019, with the two sides’ trade worth $235B,” Mr. Boyd wrote. “About 38 percent of foreign students in Australia came from China during that period, and 16 percent of tourists, both of which have dropped sharply due to COVID-19 embargos,” he added.
It is flabbergasting, disturbing, disappointing, etc. that the U.S. has not led a call for an independent investigation to be conducted to determined the origin/cause of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the height of irresponsibilty not to do so. Ignorance in this case isn’t bliss — it is another global pandemic down the road. That may well happen anyway; but, not to definitively determine the origin/cause of the current outbreak is practically INVITING another global pandemic to occur. The U.S. and as many nations as possible should join Australia’s clarion call for an independent COVID-19 investigation to be conducted. And any fan of China should look no further than China’s threats against Australia — as a precursor of how Beijing would/will act when it has economic leverage. RCP, fortunascorner.com
